ORGANIC SERS SENSORS

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an ideal surface-sensitive technique. Nanostructured metal films are the most performing SERS platforms with EFs > 1010, but several drawbacks remain preventing applications, such as high cost, complex fabrication, chemical aging of the surface, and photothermal decomposition of the analyte molecules. The impact that organic semiconductors have made in this area is negligible, with highly doped conducting polymers (polyaniline) exhibiting EFs < 10. We have identified a certain class of organic semiconductors as a very efficient SERS-active platform for molecular detection, however, in this new field, several fundamental questions remain unanswered and opportunities unexplored.
